A successful garden answers to the particulars of the site and to the vision of its creators. Your responses to the following questions will help me work with you and your property to create and maintain a garden that fits both.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

1. What is the general nature and scope of the project you have in mind (Design or maintenance? Ongoing or one-time? 10 square feet or 10 acres?)?

2. What budget do you have in mind?

3. Are there any outside restrictions (town, neighborhood, easements, etc.) that might influence design and maintenance decisions?

4. Are there any features of the property (septic systems, buried utilities or construction debris, rock ledges, boggy areas, resident wildlife, etc.) that might influence design and maintenance decisions?

5. What is the size and character (rural, urban, etc.) of the property, and do you have a plot plan or other representations of it?

6. Who (including pets and resident or visiting children!) will be using the property, and what needs (health issues, access routes, play areas, hobbies, etc.) of theirs should the landscape address?

7. Do you have any other general concerns or questions regarding your landscape and its features and use?

DESIGN/MAINTENANCE QUESTIONS

1. Which areas of your property do you use most, who (including domestic and wild critters) uses them, how and when do they use them, and how could the garden better match these uses?

2. Which areas of your property receive the least use, and are there any you would like to use more?

3. Which areas of the house (interior and decks/patios) do you use, what do they look on, and what would you like to see or NOT see from them?

4. What are the main corridors of foot and vehicle traffic, and do they need and their adjoining garden areas need any changing or upgrading?

5. What garden styles do you prefer (e.g., formal and manicured; informal and exuberant)?

6. What levels of maintenance do various parts of the garden require, who maintains them, and is organic maintenance acceptable?

7. Do you have any favorite (or NOT favorite) species or categories (fragrant, coniferous, native, edibles, etc.) of plants, or any favorite (or NOT favorite) flower and foliage colors?

8. Are you considering adding any garden features such as pergolas, water features, or fences?

9. What other design preferences, questions, or concerns do you have?
